STAFF WRITER BRISTOL PRESS— The city’s two registrars are going to face Election Day competition after all. Ajmal “Lucky” Mehdi, a convenience store owner, gathered more than 1,000 signatures to allow him to run an independent campaign to snatch one of the two registrar positions that have always been held by Democrats and Republicans. Mehdi said he views his People Party campaign as something akin to “throwing a rock into the silent ocean. We want to create a wave” of reform that can start in Bristol and ultimately spread throughout the world. He said that he’s aiming to “bring moral values and family values” into a political system that he sees as being in the grips of corrupt power brokers who are looking out for themselves rather than humanity as a whole.

Mehdi will face incumbent registrars Sharon Krawiecki and Mary Rydingsward on Nov. 6. Krawiecki is a Republican while Rydingsward, who won a primary battle last month, is a Democrat. Mehdi said he likes both women and has no problem with the job they have done. He said his campaign “has nothing to do with them” personally. He said, though, that independent voters — who make up 40 percent of the electorate — ought to control the registrar’s office instead of the major parties. Mehdi said he would prefer to have one independent registrar in charge instead of a pair of registrars from dueling political parties, something that would require a change in state law. That would make it so elections “would be fair and clean” for everyone.
